Evolution Continues

A week ago today, I confessed that I was having the urge to redesign. The current design has truly grown on me, including the turquoise, red, and brown color scheme, but I was still unhappy with a few details.

I decided that instead of a redesign, which I indeed have no time for, I would concentrate on refining the design. It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. For example, I would know that something didn’t look right or didn’t work right, but it would be difficult to put my finger on exactly what was throwing off the design.

I finally decided that what needed improvement was the header and the sidebar. I first went to work on the sidebar, gradually making some changes in real time over the past week or so. You may even have been lucky enough to be visiting the site while I was playing around. I changed the sidebar title font from Trebuchet to Lucida Sans, which is seen across the rest of the site, and made a few other alterations to the overall look of the titles. I also removed a couple things from the sidebar to make room for a “sidebar blog” that I plan to implement when I find time.

“The key to a good design is refinement, precision in every aspect…”

I also decided that the logotype had to go. It was tired and looked kind of messy, probably because it wasn’t a professional font. The new logo uses a variety of Franklin Gothics and also emphasizes the slogan, “Everything Design.” The infinity icon has stayed intact simply because I still like it and it has been here since day one. The old header wasn’t really a header, but more of a logo slapped in some white space. It lacked the strength that the new header carries, which helps anchor the design to the top of the browser window. Overall, I’m much happier with the new header design.

The key to a good design is refinement, precision in every aspect, so I’ll be continuing to polish the site over the next month, and probably even after that, because as everyone knows, a website is always a work in progress.
