The MovableType Hype
I just received my MT newsletter from the friendly Benjamin Trott, and inside were details on the new 2.65 upgrade (which, yes, I upgraded to) and an announcement of Movable Type 3.0.
To be released in Q1 of 2004, MT 3.0 will be a significant upgrade with a long list of new features, including many user-requested ones, and even a business- and organization-oriented MovableType Pro. Here’s exactly what features they’re telling us about so far:
- Comment registration, a response to both comment spam and to the
increased usage of Movable Type on large community sites. - Improved comment and TrackBack management features.
- New API hooks for plugin developers.
- User interface rebuilt using CSS.
- Support for the Atom API.
The newsletter states that “we’ll be integrating some features into 3.0
that we’re not yet ready to announce, but which we know will be very
exciting to MT users,” and it’s possible that one of these features could be some type of photo-log for uploading and organizing your photographs into albums or galleries. Another thought is that they might make the MT fields customizable, so that people can take full advantage of MovableType as not just a weblog management system, but a full-fledged CMS.
Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.

My money is on a moblog and and a post via email feature. I’ve been puzzling over the fate of MT since Typepad was released and wondered whether I should move to Typepad and that MT was now a dinosaur. I was hesitant because I’m already paying for hosting and didn’t want the hassle of moving domains and canceling accounts and I like the plugin ability of MT which I believe MT lacks.
Its good to see that MT hasn’t been completely forgotten about although I fully appreciate that all efforts were directed in getting Typepad off the ground.

I think your being a bit too optimistic with the photo gallery prediction. – They’re going to save the really big stuff for when they start charging for MT Pro.
