Last August I purchased a 17″ PowerBook G4, my first Apple ever. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and could not wait to take it up to college next year where it would became my full-time computer. About a month and a half ago, it went berserk, and has become increasingly so ever since.
Black screens and continual freezes often forced me to restart my laptop, by the end up to 50 times in one day.
Tomorrow I am headed to the local Apple Store to present my computer and one year warranty. The warranty says they’ll either (1) fix it, (2) replace it, or (3) refund it. It’s up to them which option they choose, and my guess is they’ll start with #1. I’m hoping for #2 because I’ve come to realize that the 17″ would not be an ideal laptop to lug around a college campus. Call me crazy, but I’d be more than willing to trade in my 17″ for a 15″ or even for a 12″. With the 12″, I could easily toss it in a backpack, and because it’s so small it weighs only 4.6 pounds and has a generous battery life.
Anyways, I’ll let you know how it goes. Apple is known for their strict customer service, so wish me luck.

Nice photo, Adam. Sure hope Apple can get you taken care of. I’ve got the 15″ PowerBook and I love it. I was very tempted to get the 12″, because I value size and weight. But, in the end, the 1024×768 resolution turned me off to it. That may not matter to you, but as a photographer and designer, I’d think you’d want more pixels than that. As it turned out for me, the 15″ is perfect. Portable enough, but still with a screen big enough to act as my main computer.
You’re right, though — the 17″ is a great luggable desktop replacement, but it’s not much for a true “portable.”
In any case, all of the PowerBooks are great machines — I’m sure you’ll be happy either way.

nice picture with good colors and no flare… but I guess that by tomorrow the water has ran out of the frame ;-)

Sorry to hear, Adam. Sounds like you got a lemon, my 15″ PB is amazing and I hope it holds up for college. Do whatever you can stay with a Mac, I am now converted and my life is so much better because of it.
Oh, and are you avoiding me? :) Haven’t returned my e-mail or IMs, and you’re seemingly impossible to get ahold of. Please get in touch.

Nice pic, I particularly like the sun reflection. Have you got the shot’s stats? fliters?
Anyway, I am most excited to see how many other Mac people are around here. I have a 15″ powerbook too. Like the others, I think it meets a nice mix between power & performance & still being fairly small. Another issue with the 12″ is that it has a smaller upgradable memory….

Sounds like a memory problem to me. Have you added some ram lately?Random crashes in most cases are from memory problems. If you added memory I would try to run the machine with the deault amount of ram when you bought it. Good luck.

Tim, here’s a couple of the stats. No filters were used, just my Canon G3.
