Shower

One of the first things I do when I open a photograph in Photoshop is Image » Adjustments » Desaturate. But, being the ultimate color enthusiast that I am, I quickly slam Command + Z. Lately I’ve been trying to hold myself from back from bringing back the color. When it comes down to it, I feel that black and white, in most cases, can invoke infinitely more emotion than color. So, don’t be surprised if you see an increase in B&Ws for the next while.

Hi, I found this site from a one of the deisigns at CSS Zen Gargen , and so far I am really enjoying it here, lots of great picture, great content, great design.

5/5 !!

I *heart* this photo. Very nice.

why not just take the photo in b&w to start off with? personally i am more experienced with b&w, only because i can’t develop color. it’s good stuff though!

nice photo btw, i think you got the whole grayscale range

Impressive, the photo. Glad to see, also, that the shadowing was fixed; it’s very hot now.

Thanks, Brendan and Jeff! I had originally taken this shot vertically, but I decided that I’d stick with horizontal photos, so I went back and reshot. It makes the site easier to maintain, and will make it easier to tweak in the future.

ak… if I shot in black and white, the color would be gone forever. When I shoot in color, I have both options.

Thanks, Andy. You were very right about the shadowing, so I fixed it. Looks much better. Thanks for pointing it out! :)

Hey, Adam.

I’m a fan of the new site design, for sure. After seeing that there was a new post in my RSS aggregator (Sage for Firefox) and clicking to read the post, I was quite pleasantly surprised.

The only things I’d REALLY, REALLY like to see on the main page of the site is … already there. I didn’t think I saw the “previous” photo strip before, but it’s there now. Maybe a preview (somehow) of the previous/next photos on the individual photo “archive” page would be in order, though I am happy with the current sub-navigation you have going.

One more thing: I also heart this photo (you stole my line, Jeff Croft!) Your site has just increased my appreciation of black and whites. Thanks for that.

Adam -

Since you seem to have gotten used to MoveableType, perhaps you could tell a poor newbie how to modify what the custom tags actually generate; for instance, how can I make it so there is no <p></p> around <$MTEntryBody$>? Where in the IA is that?

Thanks man, keep up the good work.

Heya! goddamn your site is gorgeous!
as for b&w photos, a different way to convert from colour to black and white is to have a play with the channel mixer(image >adjustments>channel mixer, and flick it into monochrome.
then you have complete control over the brightness and/or contrast in each channel, rather than just taking what photoshop gives you!
just though i’d give you that tip.

i really think this photo is lovely, as someone said you really did get the whole grayscale spectrum in there to great effect. looovely!

Stu, thanks so much!

Andy, you’re right that I now have quite a bit of experience with MT, but you’ve got me stumped! I know that if you set “Text Formatting” to “None,” it will not put the P tags, but then you don’t get line breaks.

Thanks, Sarah, for the compliments and for the new black and white technique! I’ll give it at try. :)

Hi Adam,

There’s a third way to get B&W from digital images. It has been presented on Design by Fire (http://www.designbyfire.com/000100.html) recently and the results are really stunning! Greg also compares the results with “Desaturate” and the “Channel Mixing” technique.

BTW: Like you photographs as well.

I was just about to post that link too JR – their results looks so much better than ye ole ctrl + shift + u.

Adam, F.Y.I.. there are some strange things (http://www.andycogbill.com/images/polselli.gif) happening on your site in IE 6 Windows.

You probably know already, but I just wanted to let you know.

I hate IE, for the record :).

i enjoy your photos and your site greatly! All I can say is that must be a big shower or else that towel is going to get wet!! I don’t know much about taking photographs so I won’t leave any technical comments until I get my own digital camera.

Hey, I like your site. To convert color images to black and white you should definitely try using the channel mixer. It offers the most control. It works like shooting with a color filter on back in the old film and black and white days.

Adam Polselli on Jul 30th 04

Thanks for the black and white tips, everyone! I never realized there was so much to converting a color photo to black and white. I’ll definitely give them all a try!

edina on Oct 30th 04

well, I love it.

espically because it is black and white, it reminds me of those movies that are in black and white, a woman is in the shower and dies, the shower is black and white..

it looks great.

great quality.
