Bathroom Door

I am very excited about iPhoto 5, particularly the fact that it supports RAW, a format that I’ll likely start using once I get my copy of iLife ’05. The only problem I have with iPhoto is that when you edit a photo, it edits the original file. For the average person that’s fine, but I prefer to keep the original files intact. Besides the “Duplicate” function, I haven’t found a very efficient way of going about this. Anyone care to share some tips?

You know, I thought iPhoto edited the original file too. But recently I discovered that the context menu (and the “Photos” menu too, it turned out) had a “Revert to original” command, which — as you might guess — reverts to the original, imported file. So now I’m not as afraid to edit pictures (in Photoshop, that is; I’ve never trusted iPhoto’s editing capabilities, or rather, I choose to use the editing application I’m most familiar with).

Hmmm, what’s going on? I haven’t been to your site for a while now and I don’t like what I’m seeing… sorry.

Can’t stand the new colours and the past few photos you’ve taken are of pretty poor quality. Namely the vase, the pool chair and especially this one of a bathroom door.

On the plus, I liked the statue and I like the shortening to Adam. (even though the ‘Just Adam’ bit sounds lame).

I hope next time I return, you’ll be back on form.

I don’t mean to cause offence, just expressing my opinion.

Laters.

Furthering what Travholt said above, iPhoto does not edit the original image. As soon as you make any modifications, it creates an ‘originals’ folder and moves the image there. The copy then gets worked on.

Have a look through finder, either by search or just folder browsing, and you will be able to see the ‘originals’ folder. This is part of the reason why the iPhoto database of images gets so damned huge so quickly.

Oh, wow! Thanks, Steve, for the great news! I’ve always been afraid to use iPhoto’s editing tools, which are very handy for snapshots, but now I won’t hesitate to do so (especially the expanded editing tools that iPhoto 5 will give rise to).

Mez, sorry you don’t like the new colors or the recent photographs. Unfortunately, the colors are sticking, as they were well received by most others, and they have grown on me as well.

I just tend to edit my photographs in Photoshop CS, but I’m interested in iPhoto 5 and the iLife 05 suite in general. Today I went to see if they had it and they didn’t. Must wait until Saturday.

What were you doing in there might I ask????

Thanks again for the info, everyone. I can’t believe I used to open my photos in Photoshop, edit them, and then save them to various disorganized folders on my computer. It’s great to know that I can just save them back to iPhoto, with the original files still intact.
